IST Precision Achieves UL508A Certification – Now Accepting Build-to-Print Electrical Control Panel Projects
We are proud to announce that IST Precision is now a UL508A certified electrical panel shop, officially recognized for our ability to design and build industrial control panels to one of the most widely accepted safety standards in North America.
This certification is a significant milestone in our continued commitment to delivering high-quality, safe, and compliant solutions for automation and machine equipment. With this new designation, IST Precision is now accepting build-to-print projects for customers requiring UL-listed panels.
What Is UL508A?
UL508A is the Standard for Industrial Control Panels set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). It establishes requirements for the component selection, construction, and wiring of control panels to ensure they meet rigorous safety and performance standards. A UL508A certification is not just a stamp—it represents verified compliance, ongoing quality control, and a commitment to safe electrical panel design.
Each UL508A-certified shop must appoint at least one Manufacturer Technical Representative (MTR)—a trained and tested individual responsible for ensuring compliance with UL standards. IST Precision currently has four certified MTRs, each having completed extensive training and examinations.
Why Choose a UL508A-Certified Panel Shop?
Partnering with a UL508A-certified shop offers several key benefits:
- Confidence in Compliance: Panels are designed and built to nationally recognized safety standards.
- Quality Assurance: All components must be UL listed or recognized, ensuring they meet performance and safety benchmarks.
- Avoid Field Inspections: Non-listed panels may require third-party inspections during installation—costly and time-consuming. With a UL mark, these hurdles are avoided.
- Quarterly UL Audits: Our processes and builds are inspected regularly by UL representatives to maintain certification, ensuring ongoing quality.
In short, customers receive panels that are built right the first time, reducing risks, costs, and delays.
UL508A vs. CE Marking: What’s the Difference?
While CE marking is commonly used in Europe, it often involves self-declaration, with no governing body enforcing compliance. UL508A, by contrast, is a third-party-certified standard, complete with training, testing, and routine audits. UL508A is accepted in the U.S. and Canada (cUL) and is ideal for North American installations.
Our Certification Process
Becoming UL508A certified required several items to be completed by the MTR:
- 8 hours of live virtual training
- 4 certification exams (passed with 80%+ scores)
- An Initial Production Inspection
- Implementation of new QA and documentation procedures
To maintain certification, we undergo quarterly audits that include build reviews, component traceability, UL label inventory, and calibration record checks. We’ve also formalized recordkeeping of each panel’s serial number and shipping date for traceability.
Build-to-Print Services – What You Need to Provide
For customers looking to outsource panel builds, we now offer UL508A-compliant build-to-print services. To begin, we typically require:
- A schematic or wiring diagram (basic drafts are acceptable—we can redraw in AutoCAD)
- A Bill of Materials (BOM)
- Manuals, UL file numbers, or installation instructions (if available)
Our engineers will review and verify each design for UL compliance—including component suitability, labeling, wire routing, SCCR calculations, and environmental ratings.
UL508A certified companies in the Southeast U.S.
There are 148 UL508A certified companies in North Carolina. However, many of these focused on dedicated products and do not provide build-to-print services. What makes us unique is we focus on building equipment and machines for other clients.
UL508A panel shops are a specialized service. In the Southeast alone:

Out of 4,058 certified shops across the U.S., IST Precision is proud to stand among the few that deliver build-to-print services.
Let’s Build Something Safe, Compliant, and Powerful
Whether you’re launching a new automation system or upgrading your existing equipment, choosing a UL508A-certified partner like IST Precision ensures your control panels are built to meet both your technical requirements and regulatory needs.
